I am a journalist and author specialising in poverty, development, the environment and food culture around the world. I’ve won awards for investigative journalism, war reporting and food writing.
I am a contributing editor of the Observer magazine and I write regularly for Newsweek, The Guardian, The Observer, The Times, the Daily Mail, Intelligent Life and Prospect Magazine. I appear on radio and TV – here’s some work for the BBC.
Stiff Upper Lip: secrets, crimes and the schooling of a ruling class, my book on the British boarding school system and its effects was published in 2017 by Weidenfeld & Nicolson and soon reprinted: here’s its website and a round-up of the reviews kind and harsh.
Planet Carnivore, my short e-book on meat, too much and too cheap, was published in 2013 by Guardian Books. I’m working on a new historical project.
I’m based in Edinburgh, UK.
